The Karoo Kettle is a locally handcrafted 1.25 litre outdoor kettle designed to boil water quickly using small sticks, twigs and other dry biomass, without relying on electricity. Its double-wall chimney design channels heat through the centre of the kettle for fast, fuel-efficient water heating, while the supplied fire pot and 3-way pot stand extend the system into a compact outdoor cooking setup. How It Works

Water is held in the jacket surrounding the central chimney. A small fire is lit in the fire pot below the kettle and additional dry fuel can be fed through the chimney as required. The rising heat is concentrated through the centre of the kettle, providing a large heated surface area around the water. A whistle cap indicates when the water has boiled.

Cooking Options

• Cook while heating water: assemble the 3-way pot stand over the chimney to support a small, shallow pan for quick reheating or cooking while the kettle contains water.
• Cook directly on the fire pot: remove the kettle, add fuel to the fire pot and place the 3-way stand securely into its grooves to support a small to medium pot or pan.
• Raise the fire pot: the 3-way stand can also be positioned under the fire pot to lift it off the ground where appropriate.

Important Notes

• Never heat the kettle empty. Always ensure there is water in the kettle before placing it over a fire or burner.
• Before first use, boil fresh water in the kettle two or three times and discard the water.
• Fill through the spout and do not fill higher than approximately 2 cm below the top.
• The kettle, chimney, fire pot, pot stand, whistle and escaping steam become extremely hot during use. Allow all components to cool fully before handling or packing away.
• Keep children and pets clear of the kettle and fire area while in use.
• Use only on a stable, level, non-combustible surface and comply with local fire restrictions and campsite rules.
• In sensitive outdoor areas, protect the ground beneath the fire pot and extinguish all embers completely with water or sand after use.
• For cooking above the kettle, the kettle must contain water. Do not use the kettle body empty as a chimney stove.
• Remove limescale when required using a 1:1 mixture of water and white vinegar, then rinse and re-boil with fresh water before use.
• Clean soot build-up from the inside of the chimney periodically and store the kettle empty with the whistle removed to allow airflow.
