  • Can You Convert Your Existing Electric Geyser to Solar?

    One of the most common questions received by Sustainable is: “Can I convert my existing electric geyser to solar?”

    In many cases, a serviceable geyser may be able to form part of a photovoltaic—or PV—water-heating system. Instead of circulating water through a roof-mounted solar collector, the system uses dedicated solar panels to produce electricity for heating the water.

    However, a conversion should never be selected from the geyser’s litre capacity alone. The geyser, element, controller, panels, roof and household’s hot-water requirements must be considered together.

    What is a PV geyser conversion?

    A PV water-heating system uses electricity produced directly by solar panels to heat water in a geyser. A dedicated controller manages the solar input and, depending on the system design, may coordinate an AC electrical backup supply as well.

    This should not be confused with connecting the geyser to the home’s normal inverter output. A dedicated PV geyser system is designed around water heating and may operate independently of the main household solar and battery system.

    That separation is often useful. Solar energy can be directed to hot water during the day without requiring the same battery storage that would be needed to heat the water at night.

    The main components

    The exact contents differ between systems, but a PV conversion may involve:

    • Dedicated solar panels
    • A purpose-designed PV geyser controller
    • A compatible heating element or dual AC/DC element
    • Correct cables, connectors, isolators and electrical protection
    • Suitable panel mounting for the roof type
    • Temperature sensing and control equipment
    • AC backup connection where supported and required

    Complete systems may package several of these components together. For example, Sustainable lists the Geyser Gecko PV Solar Water Heating System and Geyserwise PV solar water-heating systems among the available water-heating options.

    The inclusion of an item in a kit does not confirm that it suits every geyser or roof. The final combination must match the manufacturer’s requirements and the property.

    What must be checked before converting?

    The geyser’s condition

    It makes little sense to build a new solar-heating system around a geyser that is leaking, badly corroded or approaching the end of its serviceable life. Have the cylinder and existing installation assessed first.

    The geyser’s capacity

    A 100L geyser serving one or two people has different heating requirements from a 200L or 300L cylinder serving a larger household. Capacity affects the energy needed to raise the water temperature and the time available for solar heating.

    The existing flange and element arrangement

    The physical fit and electrical specification of the replacement or additional element must be compatible with the geyser. Do not assume that every element fits every cylinder.

    Available roof space and solar exposure

    The panels need appropriate unshaded space and suitable mounting. Roof material, pitch, orientation and structural condition all matter. Partial shading at the wrong time of day can reduce useful production.

    The household’s hot-water routine

    PV water heating works especially well when solar energy is available during the period in which the geyser can prepare water for later use. A household with heavy early-morning demand may need an appropriate backup strategy or different control schedule.

    Water temperature and safety controls

    Temperature control and plumbing safety components remain essential. A conversion is not only an electrical project; it affects a pressurised hot-water installation.

    Will the geyser still work when there is no sun?

    That depends on the selected system.

    Some PV water-heating solutions retain AC electrical backup. The controller can allow the household to use grid or generator power when solar energy has not heated enough water. The operating logic and user settings depend on the equipment.

    An alternative is to combine solar-heated water with a correctly selected instantaneous gas water heater. This is covered in Part 4: How Solar and Gas Can Work Together for Reliable Hot Water.

    The backup method should be chosen deliberately. If unrestricted electrical backup heats the geyser regardless of solar availability, it can reduce the potential electricity saving. If backup is too restricted, the household may run short of hot water during poor weather or unusual demand.

    Can the PV panels also charge the home battery?

    Normally, panels dedicated to a PV geyser controller form a separate water-heating circuit. They should not be assumed to charge the household battery or supply general appliances.

    There are broader system designs in which solar generation and controllable loads are managed together, but those require suitable inverters, controls, protection and professional design. Never connect one solar array to unrelated controllers unless the equipment and design specifically allow it.

    What about adding a few panels to an existing geyser system?

    Panel voltage, current, wattage and string configuration must remain within the controller’s permitted operating range. Adding a panel of a different electrical specification can affect the entire string.

    This is one reason why the model numbers of the existing panels and controller are important. “It is a 400W panel” is not enough information for a compatibility decision.

    When replacing the whole geyser may be more sensible

    A conversion is attractive when the existing geyser is in good condition and compatible equipment is available. Replacement may be the better path when:

    • The cylinder is old or damaged
    • The capacity is no longer suitable for the household
    • The existing installation requires substantial correction
    • A direct or indirect solar thermal geyser is preferred
    • The desired system requires a different cylinder configuration
    • The property is being renovated and the plumbing layout can be planned properly

    A practical enquiry checklist

    Before requesting a PV conversion recommendation, provide:

    • A clear photograph of the geyser label
    • Geyser make, model, capacity and age where known
    • Photographs of the installation and roof area
    • Roof material and approximate orientation
    • City or town
    • Number of regular users
    • Typical times of hot-water use
    • Desired backup source
    • Details of any existing solar-power system
