Water Recycling

If you think that water recycling is too much effort or a waste of time consider this: the average person in the average household uses about 250 litres of water per day. Sound like an exaggeration? Think about how many times you flush the toilet (11L per flush); how long you stand in a nice warm shower, how often you use your dishwasher or washing machine and how much water you really drink (tea and coffee included). It adds up pretty quickly.

Recycling your daily water

Studies show that an average suburban house can reduce its water consumption by 30-40% without much effort or sacrifice. With some simple water recycling solutions you can cut your water consumption from 250L to 150L per day. And, if you add recycling grey water to your efforts, you can increase that figure up to 60%.

Sustainable.co.za aims to make water recycling part of your household routine with a range of products and systems that assist in the capture and recycling of grey water, including rainwater. Our prices are affordable and our products easy to use.

What is grey water?

Grey water is the water that is left at the end of certain domestic processes, such as showering, bathing and washing dishes and laundry. More than 50% of domestic waste water production is grey water, which means that any recycling system you use has an enormous impact on household water consumption.

The water left over after you’ve washed your car is also considered grey water. Recycling car wash water is probably the easiest way to recycle water because all you have to do is slosh it over your lawn.

Putting recycled water to use

Recycled water is better suited to certain purposes than others. Recycled grey water should never be used for potable water purposes (i.e. cooking or drinking) without proper purification, and even then it’s still better left for other domestic purposes, such as flushing toilets and watering the garden.

Bath or shower grey water contains useful compounds, such as nitrates and phosphates that are commonly found in garden fertilizers. Recycled grey water can be used on your vegetable garden, but not two weeks before harvesting.

Recycling rain water

Catching rainwater is one of the easiest ways to recycle water. As rainwater lacks the impurities of grey water, it can generally be safely recycled for cooking, drinking and flushing toilets and irrigation. You can catch rainwater for recycling in buckets or containers beneath roof drains (this water will need to be purified before domestic use) or simply place buckets beneath the open sky to catch pure rainwater for most residential recycling purposes.

Climate change means that we can’t rely on traditional rain weather patterns any more, and water restrictions are common place all over the world. You can ease the demand on water catchment areas and national water supplies by purchasing a water recycling system from Sustainable.co.za.

With Sustainable.co.za’s water recycling solutions, you no longer have to wonder how to recycle water, instead you can wonder what to do with all the money you’ve saved and bask in the satisfaction that comes with doing your bit to save the planet.
