What is grey water?
Grey water is the water that is left at the end of certain domestic processes, such as showering, bathing and washing dishes and laundry. More than 50% of domestic waste water production is grey water, which means that any recycling system you use has an enormous impact on household water consumption.
The water left over after you’ve washed your car is also considered grey water. Recycling car wash water is probably the easiest way to recycle water because all you have to do is slosh it over your lawn.
Putting recycled water to use
Recycled water is better suited to certain purposes than others. Recycled grey water should never be used for potable water purposes (i.e. cooking or drinking) without proper purification, and even then it’s still better left for other domestic purposes, such as flushing toilets and watering the garden.
Bath or shower grey water contains useful compounds, such as nitrates and phosphates that are commonly found in garden fertilizers. Recycled grey water can be used on your vegetable garden, but not two weeks before harvesting.
Recycling rain water
Catching rainwater is one of the easiest ways to recycle water. As rainwater lacks the impurities of grey water, it can generally be safely recycled for cooking, drinking and flushing toilets and irrigation. You can catch rainwater for recycling in buckets or containers beneath roof drains (this water will need to be purified before domestic use) or simply place buckets beneath the open sky to catch pure rainwater for most residential recycling purposes.
