Grid-Tied systems use PV modules to generate DC power. The DC power goes to a grid interactive (grid-tied) inverter which converts the photovoltaic DC power to 240 volt AC power that is compatible with the power grid. If the PV system is generating more power than the house can use, the excess is sent out over the grid to supply others. If the house needs more power than the PV system can supply, then the extra is drawn from the grid as usual. Grid tied systems only work when the grid is up. If the grid power goes out, the grid tie inverter will shut down immediately.
For those who do not have post-paid or smart metres installed on their premises, the optional grid tie limiter prevents the export of power to the grid. This unit measures the power required by the load and electronically notifies the grid-tie inverter to limit the power generated by the solar array to equal that of the current AC load. Due to the fact that no excess power is now being generated, no power can be exported. This solution is most suitable to those who use a lot of their power during the day.
